Lorde Wonders "What Was That" on First Single in Four Years

After a busy week – complete with a courtside Knicks appearance and an almost-shut-down impromptu Washington Square Park performance on Wednesday night – the songstress has officially lifted the veil on her first single in almost four years: “What Was That.”
Co-produced by Lorde, Jim-E Stack and Dan Nigro, “What Was That” arrives on the heels of an intriguing social media rollout and signals the songstress’s first studio release since Solar Power, which she dropped in November of 2021.
The cut sounds like summer, carried by a captivating synth arrangement and an intoxicating chorus. “MDMA in the back garden, blow our pupils up / We kissed for hours straight, well, baby, what was that? / I remember sayin’ then, “This is the best cigarette of my life” / Well, I want you just like that,” she sings.
