For IKEA‘s annual Milan Design Week showcase this year, the Swedish homeware manufacturer has released a new edition of its beloved Stockholm collection to celebrate a special anniversary for the elevated line. With new designs by Ola Wihlborg, Nike Karlsson, and Paulin Machado, the revamped range includes upholstered seating, wooden furniture, home decor, and soft goods inspired by the natural Scandinavian landscape.

Born in 1985, STOCKHOLM 2025 marks the special line’s 40th anniversary. Over the years, the collection’s aesthetic has become increasingly refined, characterized by the modern functionalist sensibilities of Scandinavian design. In need of a “best of IKEA collection,” Ingvar Kamprad initiated the collection to offer premium materials and timeless design at a more accessible price point. The original brochure included the message, “The most beautiful Swedish furniture had long been reserved for a few: the rich. Ordinary folk had to make do with poor copies or nothing at all. This doesn’t sit right with us.”

The intention remains as IKEA ushers the line into a new era, presenting its largest STOCKHOLM delivery yet with 96 items. Leading the collection is an extra-deep modular sofa system designed by Ola Wihlborg. Offered in four different color ways, including aquatic turquoise and deep brown velvet, the sculpted seats are wide and low with large,e smooth arms. On the design, Wihlborg said, “I wanted to create a high-quality sofa that maintains its shape and looks the same even after you stand up from sitting in it. Something that prioritises comfort without needing extra pillows.”

Another sofa by Nike Karlsson boasts a more traditional feel, with a solid pine wood frame and neutral cushions filled with coconut fibre. The designer also reprises rattan materials found in the 2017 edition with a new sliding-door cabinet featuring a hand-worked woven facade. Karlsson highlighted that the prominent use of natural materials reflects the earthbound inspirations behind the 2025 line. “You’d think with the name STOCKHOLM, the pieces would have a big city feeling, but we went outside the urban setting, to the nature and islands around it,” she said.

Karlsson also noted that the brand worked with a Swedish pine supplier to source the highest-quality variety for the new chairs, bookshelves, and dining tables. Scandinavian woodland inspiration continues with contributions from textile designer Paulin Machado, including wool rugs adorned with birch tree patterns and printed lampshades featuring foliage and mushroom illustrations.
