Sony Reveals 'Resident Evil' Fall 2026 Release Date

Constantin’s Resident Evil is getting a franchise reboot alongside Barbarian and Weapon filmmaker Zach Cregger as the director. The project, based on Capco’s largely popular horror video game, is set to stay at Sony.

Cregger is expected to write the script and direct with the help of Shay Hatten as a co-writer. Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film with Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon as well as PlayStation Productions on the production team. Cregger most recently produced this year’s film Companion and is also set to be writing, directing and producing the Julia Garner and Josh Brolin-led horror film Weapons for Warner Bros., set for January 2026.

The original Resident Evil project was the PlayStation video game in 1994 and was later ported to other consoles. There have been six previous Resident Evil films in the franchise, beginning with the Milla Jovovich- and Michelle Rodriguez-led one that came out in 2002. Next was Resident Evil: Apocalypse in 2004, Resident Evil: Extinction in 2007, Resident Evil: Afterlife in 2010, Resident Evil: Retribution in 2012, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in 2017 and in 2021 Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. In total, the franchise collectively grossed over $1.2 billion USD across the world.
