Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey continue the seat-gripping story of Joel and Ellie as they navigate the increasingly dangerous world of monsters and violence in the upcoming season two of HBO‘s The Last of Us. In anticipation of the second season, the streaming giant has released the official trailer for the Emmy-winning drama, set to return next month.

Season two picks up five years after the events of the first season, with the ominous trailer teasing the emotional and physical toll Pascal’s Joel and Ramsey’s Ellie have to face. The trailer shows Ellie sneaking through abandoned buildings, seemingly fearful of what is lurking nearby, as broken glass litters the floor and a wild dog appears behind before the trailer cuts to a shot of a man’s watch on his arm and another clip of a gravesite of thin wooden crosses each draped over with a medallion. Joel is seen with Ellie as they trek across a forest, wherein he checks on Ellie asking, “You okay?” Further clips of Joel are seen in a house in Jackson, Wyoming, a settlement where he lived with Ellie for five years since the ending of the first season. He holds his brother Tommy’s (played by Gabriel Luna) son, Benjamin on his lap telling him, “This is where we live.” He points to a map and Benjamin becomes curious over a fence and asks, “What’s inside>” to which Joel responds, “People,” and shots of Joel and Ellie playing the guitar and dancing with Dina (played by Isabella Merced) appear on screen. When his nephew asks “What’s outside?” Joel responds, “Monsters.” Shots of shots of someone wielding a scythe, W.L.F. (Washington Liberation Front) tanks and soldiers, new antagonist Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) trudging through snow appear alongside clips of monsters and explosions occur outside the Jackson settlement, giving glimpse of what is to come in the new season.

The trailer is action packed, filled with fearful firing, people running through the woods with lit torches, Ellie walking through another abandoned building with a new character played by Young Mazino called jessie, and Ellie kissing Dina and revealing a tattoo to Joel. Joel and Ellie seem to be fighting a battle of their own, appearing in a standoff in what appears to be the most climactic part of the trailer. Ellie can be heard saying to Joel, “You swore,” implying that he had broken a promise. Season two arrives on April 13.
