Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for its upcoming animated film Smurfs, starring Rihanna as the voice of Smurfette. The pop icon not only brings the beloved blue character to life but also delivers a cover of Belinda Carlisle’s 1987 hit “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.”

The trailer opens with Rihanna introducing the film before transporting viewers to Smurf Village, where her character, Smurfette, proclaims herself “the coolest Smurf in the whole village.” A lively party scene unfolds, set to Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop the Music,” but the celebration is cut short when Papa Smurf is mysteriously abducted. The Smurfs must then embark on a daring adventure into the human world to rescue their leader.

In addition to voicing Smurfette, Rihanna serves as a producer on the film and has written original songs for the soundtrack. “I tried to get the Papa Smurf role, but it didn’t work out,” she joked at CinemaCon 2023 while announcing her involvement in the project.

Directed by Chris Miller and Matt Landon, Smurfs boasts an all-star cast alongside Rihanna, including John Goodman, Natasha Lyonne, Nick Offerman, Octavia Spencer, Sandra Oh, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll and Kurt Russell.

Smurfs is set to hit theaters on July 18. Watch the trailer above.
