Threshold is an exploration of boundaries—those we face, those we break and those that confine us. Curated by Hypeart, this upcoming exhibition at Bonhams LA is a moment of transition, a pause between the known and the unknown, forcing us to confront our environment and our place within it With works from Shepard Fairey, George Condo, Beverly Pepper, Sam Gilliam and others, Threshold invites viewers to engage with art that challenges conventions, blurs lines and forges new paths. The exhibition, on view from February 18-21, will examine shifting boundaries in art and society.

In a charitable partnership, Hypeart and Bonhams has collaborated with Project Angel Food to present works by Elizabeth Neel and Margo Wolowiec as part of Threshold. The proceeds from the sale of these specific works, which are a part of an upcoming auction by Project Angel Food, will directly benefit the charity’s mission to serve those affected by the LA wildfires.

Accompanying the exhibition is a panel discussion and the much-anticipated launch of Fairey-isms, a book by No More Rulers in collaboration with Princeton University Press, by founder Larry Warsh, featuring intimate interviews and insights from renowned street artist Shepard Fairey. A special event reception and panel discussion on February 20 will bring together Fairey; Richard Scarry, art curator and dealer; Larry Warsh, art collector and founder of No More Rulers; Keith Estiler, Managing Editor at Hypeart/HYPEBEAST; Ralph Taylor, Global Head of 20th/21st Century Art at Bonhams; and Isabel Norsten, Specialist in Post-War & Contemporary Art at Bonhams.

“Propaganda art is really powerful and people fear it because they think that it has a sinister and manipulative agenda, but making art that has a point of view that’s about correcting social ills and abuses of power, that’s good propaganda” – Shepard Fairey, ‘Fairey-Isms’ by No More Rulers, 2025.

Take a look at highlights from our exhibition below, RSVP for our special event here, and visit Bonhams’ website for more information.

Shepard Fairey “| 3 Face Horizontal (Red/Yellow)” 2024

For decades, Shepard Fairey has shaped the language of street art. His iconic image of Andre the Giant, originally born from a rebellious sticker campaign, turned a figure once dismissed as “cheesy” into a cultural symbol. 3 Face Horizontal (Red/Yellow), featured in THRESHOLD, continues Fairey’s legacy of subverting expectations and elevating the ordinary into the extraordinary, reminding us of the power of reinvention.

George Condo “Desolation Angel” 1981

George Condo’s work is a deep dive into the psyche, unmasking the chaotic dance between internal turmoil and external influence. “Desolation Angel” embodies this struggle with an angel wielding an arrow—caught in a tragic collision with fate. Is it a casualty of war? Condo’s work leaves us to ponder what remains when the world falls apart.

Magdalena Abakanowicz “Figure on Beam” circa 1994

Magdalena Abakanowicz’s transformative fibre works broke the mold of sculpture in the ’60s and ’70s, using soft, woven materials to tell powerful stories of loss and survival. “Figure on Beam,” a haunting piece featuring a headless figure mounted on a wheel axle, speaks to Abakanowicz’s personal history—witnessing the horrors of war and the stripping away of human identity.

Sam Gilliam “Bad River Series C #11” 1988

A pioneer of Postwar American painting, Sam Gilliam’s radical approach reshaped the possibilities of Abstract Expressionism. Known for his “Drape” collection of paintings, which were suspended without stretchers, Gilliam sought to break down boundaries in both art and society. “Bad River Series C #11” is a testament to his continued exploration of form, rhythm and material—a visual dialogue inspired by the freedom and improvisation of jazz.

Elizabeth Neel “US 11” 2019

Elizabeth Neel’s work challenges traditional modes of abstraction, embracing both chaos and structure. “US 11” represents the fracturing of the American ideal—its flag dislodging and falling in an arresting reflection of political unrest. For Threshold, this piece speaks directly to the volatile currents shaping our present moment.
