Taking cues from early modernism.

London’s historic Gracechurch Street Hotel has been reimagined by renowned design studio Holloway Li, seamlessly blending its 1913 Beaux-Arts grandeur with contemporary elements. Originally an HSBC bank, the 203-room hotel draws inspiration from early modernism, balancing heritage with modern hospitality.

The redesign highlights the building’s architectural elegance with double-height Cipollino marble walls, intricately plastered ceilings and a striking geometric backlit installation. The lobby transforms from a co-working space by day to a social lounge by night, anchored by a hybrid reception-desk-coffee-counter.

Holloway Li infused the space with bespoke artisan touches, including octagonal brass pendants by Joe Armitage, inspired by the building’s 1950s Typist Room. Curtain headers reference London’s tailoring heritage, while three large-scale canvases by local artist Elizabeth Power root the design in its historic context.

Guestrooms continue this interplay between past and present, featuring adaptable furniture for work and relaxation. Mid-century influences appear through Paolozzi prints and Carl Hansen armchairs, while fluted headboards and sisal carpeting add warmth. A custom desk lamp by Joe Armitage, inspired by his grandfather’s 1952 floor lamp, underscores the project’s meticulous attention to detail.

By merging history with contemporary design, Holloway Li has transformed Gracechurch Street Hotel into a refined, multifunctional space that honors its past while catering to modern travelers.
