BMW has introduced the “Vision Driving Experience,” a test vehicle designed to push the limits of driving dynamics and efficiency. Although not planned for production, this high-performance prototype serves as a rolling laboratory for BMW’s next-generation Neue Klasse models, testing the capabilities of the “Heart of Joy,” a new drivetrain and dynamics control unit.

Tested at the BMW Performance Driving Center in Spartanburg, U.S., the Vision Driving Experience showcases how the Heart of Joy transforms electric mobility. This advanced system processes data ten times faster than previous iterations, ensuring precise control over acceleration, braking, steering and energy recuperation. Developed in-house, the Heart of Joy is one of four central computing units in Neue Klasse vehicles and will be integrated into future BMW EVs.

The Heart of Joy optimizes driving through BMW Dynamic Performance Control, ensuring seamless traction and handling even under extreme conditions. With an astounding 18,000 Nm (13,269 lb-ft) of torque, the test vehicle proves the system’s capability to handle substantial power while maintaining stability and precision.

Efficiency sees a significant boost with integrated energy recuperation, reducing reliance on traditional braking. According to BMW, 98 percent of daily braking can be handled by recuperation alone, improving efficiency by 25 percent and extending the vehicle’s range.

This next-generation technology enables smoother acceleration, precise cornering and near-seamless stopping. Additionally, the Vision Driving Experience’s illuminated wheel rims visually indicate acceleration (green), recuperation (blue) and conventional braking (orange), offering real-time feedback on system operations.

While the Vision Driving Experience itself won’t reach production, the Heart of Joy will debut in the first Neue Klasse model set for launch later this year at BMW’s Debrecen plant in Hungary.
