Filmmaker James Cameron is now a billionaire. Forbes reports that the 71-year-old’s net worth stands at a whopping $1.1 billion USD, making him only the fifth director to join the billionaire’s club alongside George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson and Tyler Perry.
Forbes further notes that Cameron is the only filmmaker to have acquired most of his billionaire status through his movie earnings, which have earned almost $9 billion USD in the global box office collectively. Although the director has investments in real estate, environmental conversation, plant-based food and deep-sea exploration, as well as his known prioritization of creative control over cash, Cameron’s salaries, profits, theme parks and toys licensing revenues and the equity value from his Lightstorm Entertainment are more than enough to sustain his status.
Cameron’s billionaire status is announced just before the premiere of Avatar: Fire and Ash, which Forbes estimates will make the filmmaker at least $200 million USD (before taxes and fees) if box office projections are correct.
