Asif Hoque Brings ‘My Sunshine’ to Mindy Solomon Gallery

Mindy Solomon Gallery has opened My Sunshine, a new body of work by Brooklyn-based artist Asif Hoque that transforms a single pivotal moment into a focused and mythic series. The paintings follow Hoque’s recurring figure, Golden Boy, at the instant he encounters a radiant celestial being. That emotional flash becomes the foundation for compositions that feel both intimate and cinematic.

Hoque notes that the light central to this series draws from early memories. “As kids, my brother and I would go to the beach early in the morning to catch the sunrise. Those moments instilled something in me, like a glow, and I wanted to capture it in my practice.” He adds that the triptych featuring Golden Boy and Golden Girl pays tribute to his partner. “I wanted to create this triptych of Golden Boy and Golden Girl as a tribute to my partner Sherly. There’s a golden path illuminated in the water that leads to Golden Girl. She’s my light.”

The exhibition continues Hoque’s expanding universe of glowing figures, drifting cloudscapes, and symbolic creatures while highlighting his engagement with art history. Brooklyn Museum curator and exhibition writer Indira A. Abiskaroon Valbuena notes that Hoque’s work draws from “Ancient Greek and Roman mythologies, Baroque grandeur, and Rococo exuberance” as well as the luminism of Joaquín Sorolla and the transcendental atmospheres of Agnes Pelton. She adds that South Asian miniature painting and the street art of his South Florida upbringing also inform his practice, creating a “hybrid visual language” rooted in memory, environment and emotional sensation.

My Sunshine is now on view at Mindy Solomon Gallery through January 10, 2026.
