Summary

  • Letterboxd is launching the Video Store in early December 2025, a curated film rental platform built directly into the site
  • The non-subscription service uses millions of member watchlists to program “shelves” of hard-to-find films and restorations
  • Rentals will integrate with the community’s lists and reviews and be available across web, iOS, and Android

Letterboxd is elevating its mission of film discovery by launching the Letterboxd Video Store. Slated for an early December 2025 debut, this new feature is not a subscription service, but rather a curated film rental platform built directly into the site. The initiative aims to solve the frustration of adding a movie to a watchlist only to find it unavailable to stream.

Instead of endless scrolling, the Video Store will feature curated “shelves,” much like the “employee picks” section of a local video shop. These selections are programmed using millions of member watchlists and reviews, ensuring the films are those the community genuinely wants to see. The shelves will showcase titles such as festival standouts lacking distribution, long-awaited watchlisted movies, and celebrated restorations or rediscoveries.

The platform will also offer “limited-time drops” of sneak peeks and unreleased gems. Rentals are designed to integrate seamlessly with the Letterboxd community, appearing in lists, reviews, and Journal features. Availability and pricing will vary based on geographic location as Letterboxd works to maximize accessibility. Viewers will be able to watch their rented titles across web, iOS, Android, and various TV apps.
