The global artificial intelligence landscape just gained a formidable new competitor. Billionaire founder Jeff Bezos has confirmed the establishment of his groundbreaking new AI startup, Project Prometheus, and in a significant move, he will assume the role of Co-CEO. This marks Bezos’s first executive operational role in a major venture since stepping down as Amazon CEO, signaling serious intent to disrupt the highly competitive AI sector.
Named after the mythical figure known for bringing fire and knowledge to humanity, Project Prometheus is reportedly focused on developing next-generation foundational AI models designed for generalized intelligence. Industry analysts suggest the company will compete directly with established giants like OpenAI and Google DeepMind, leveraging Bezos’s vast resources and engineering philosophy.
Bezos will share the Co-CEO title at Project Prometheus with Vik Bajaj, who is a chemist and a physicist who worked closely with Google’s co-founder Sergey Brin at Google’s X. The project is coming right out of the gates with $6.2 billion USD in funding. Though he will still be heavily involved in Blue Origin, Project Prometheus is said to have an AI development portion dedicated to spacecrafts, along with automobile and computer manufacturing.
The launch of Project Prometheus is set to immediately reshape the industry, drawing intense scrutiny and competition as the company prepares to unveil its initial research goals early next year. This comes a year after Bezos invested in Physical Intelligence, another start-up that focuses on applying AI to robots. Currently, Project Prometheus already has nearly 100 employees, poaching top talent from competitors like OpenAI, DeepMind and Meta.
