Summary

  • James James is releasing a collaborative “Frankenstein” print with director Guillermo del Toro on November 25
  • The edition reimagines the film’s poster with sculptural embossment, gloss effects and delicate foil embellishments featuring its main characters

James Jean typically works solo, save for his collaborative posters with Guillermo del Toro. Over the last few years the Taiwanese-American illustrator and horror maestro have cultivated quiet the creative partnership after del Toro tapped Jane to design the leading poster for his 2017 film The Shape of Water, a fantastical, aquatic scene. The two later came together for a Pinnochio-inspired artwork, and now they are reuniting for the director’s most recent film, Frankenstein.

Jean revealed the collaborative project via Instagram, though fans of the artist may have recognized his dreamy signature early on. “When Guillermo del Toro asked me to create the poster for Frankenstein, I could not have been more honored,” he shared. “He talked about how the film was the pinnacle of everything he had wanted to achieve, and I wanted to make something worthy of his masterpiece.”

Jean’s lush, meticulous composition pairs complements the symbolic flourishes and subtle narrative cues of del Toro’s poetic take on Mary Shelley’s classic. The upcoming “Frankenstein” print features a back-turned Creature (Jacob Elordi) with skin flayed open in a floral bloom. Surrounding him are the film’s central figures — Victor, Elizabeth, and the Angel of Death — portrayed by the likes of Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth. Unlike the original theatrical poster, Jean’s print introduces an embossed figure at the bottom: a woman whose body sprouts flowers, nodding to themes of life, death and renewal central to the story.

Jean calls this edition his “most technically challenging print yet” with immaculate detail bursting throughout. The piece features sculpted glass-like embossment, precise gloss effects and delicate foil embellishments as figures rise out of the print itself. “Every delicate fiber of muscle comes to life under shifting light,” the artist described.

The limited-time “Frankenstein” will be available to purchase via the artist’s website for 24-hours only starting November 25 at 8AM PT. Measuring at 33.5” x 23”, the print is priced at $525 USD.
