Independent French watch brand AWAKE has just unveiled the Sơn Mài – FRAGMENTS collection, a new chapter to its original Sơn Mài collection released in 2024. This release continues the artistic exploration of Hanoi’s craftsmanship by combining traditional Vietnamese lacquer with natural mother-of-pearl and the ancient Japanese art of Raden.
Spanning three distinct variants, each watch represents a dialogue between cultures – Japan, Vietnam, France and Switzerland -brought together through a shared pursuit of beauty and precision. Spanning Blue, Green and Pink dials, each variation evokes natural and cosmic imagery – from forest light to ocean depths and twilight skies. Every dial requires nearly 15 hours of meticulous manual work, transforming fragments of mother-of-pearl into iridescent mosaics that shift with light and perspective.
The collection’s craftsmanship extends beyond the dial, pairing artistry with Swiss horological excellence. Powered by the La Joux-Perret G101 automatic movement, each watch offers a 68-hour power reserve and refined finishes visible through a sapphire crystal case back. The luminous signature, inspired by Japanese chiaroscuro, ensures the hands and markers glow with poetic depth at night. Completing the sensory experience, straps are handcrafted by Maison Jean Rousseau in calfskin leather lined with Alcantara, color-matched to each dial and equipped with quick-release buckles for comfort and durability.
