Liu Bolin’s camouflage art is something akin to a magic trick. By meticulously painting himself into various settings, the artist – known as “The Invisible Man” – challenges perceptions of visibility through his mind-bending self-portraits. For the occasion of  Singapore Art Week, Liu will orchestrate his most ambitious project yet: transforming a 100-person ensemble into the country’s historic Clifford Pier.

Organized by DECK Photography Art Center and Liu’s namesake studio, Hiding in Singapore: The Journey Between brings together 25 local painters and will see participants vanish into the fabric of Singapore’s heritage in celebration of the nation’s 60th birthday.

“This groundbreaking initiative will unite Singaporeans from all walks of life — from former harbour boatmen to young professionals — in an unprecedented display of community art,” DECK wrote in a recent statement.

This project’s title is a play off of Liu’s renowned “Hiding in the City” series, where he camouflaged  into detailed scenes across China. The live installation follows Liu’s solo presentation at the Singapore International Photography Festival last October, where he disappeared into the backdrop of Merlion Park and Chinatown Complex Hawker Centre.

The second installment of Hiding in Singapore will be held at The Clifford Pier at The Fullerton Bay Hotel on January 19 from 12pm to 6pm SST.
