‘Game Informer’ Shut Down by GameStop After 33 Years
GameStop has shuttered the longest-running gaming magazine in the US, laying off all of its staff.
Game Informer will be shutting down after 33 years of operations. Founded in 1991 by the Minnesota game store FuncoLand, Game Informer was the longest-running video game magazine in the US.
GameStop acquired the magazine when it bought FuncoLand in 2000. The magazine began publishing online in the early 2010s in addition to putting 10 print issues a year.
On Friday, the Game Informer staff were called into a meeting where GameStop’s VP of HR told them that the publication was closing immediately, Kotaku reported. All of the employees were reportedly informed that they were laid off and would begin receiving the terms of their severance packages.
According to Kotaku, the forthcoming 367th edition of Game Informer, a cover dedicated to Dragon Age: The Veilguard, will be its final issue.
Game Informer released a statement online, though one employee told Kotaku that the statement wasn’t written by anyone on the magazine’s staff:
