The streets of Stockholm are set to become a mobile gallery from May 17 to 19, as the BMW i5 M60 xDrive, dressed in the artwork of Karin Westman, shuttles guests to and from the Market Art Fair 2024. This initiative, inspired by the iconic BMW Art Car series, showcases electric vehicles featuring the work of Nordic artists for the second consecutive year.

This year’s theme, “Wetland,” presented by the Swedish artist, features sensual and abstract designs inspired by the Baroque period, characterized by a dramatic and rich color palette. Westman’s work will adorn several BMW i5 M60 xDrive vehicles, transforming them into moving canvases that blend the realms of industrial design and fine art.

Johanna Kriisa, CEO of BMW Sweden, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Combining art and mobility has always been a passion for BMW. The collaboration with Market Art Fair gives us a unique opportunity to support young Nordic artists while emphasizing our commitment to art and culture.”

The BMW Art Car project, which began in 1975, has seen cars painted by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol, David Hockney, and Jeff Koons. This tradition of artistic collaboration highlights BMW’s longstanding global cultural engagement and its continued commitment to innovation through art.

Petra Stenvall-Thompson, Partnership Manager at Market Art Fair, added, “To be able to collaborate with such a natural partner and together promote a young artist and bring the art into the city in the form of mobile artworks feels fantastic.”

As these artfully designed BMW i5 M60 xDrive vehicles glide through the city, they promise to offer a unique experience that celebrates the convergence of art, technology and mobility, underscoring BMW’s commitment to cultural enrichment and sustainable innovation.
