Live-Action 'Popeye' Reboot Film In the Works

Marking the franchise’s first live-action title since the 1980 film with Robin Williams.

A reboot of the live-action Popeye film is currently in development.

According to Varietythe upcoming big-budget movie is in the works over at Chernin Entertainment and King Features with screenwriter Michael Caleo. This will mark the franchise’s first live-action release since 1980’s Popeye, which starred the late Robin Williams as the titular sailor and Shelley Duval as the love of his life, Olive Oyl. The Robert Altman-directed film grossed about $60 million USD worldwide against a $20 million budget.

The last Popeye release dates back to 2004’s Popeye’s Voyage: The Quest for Pappy, an animated Christmas special.
