Neil Young Returns to Spotify After Two-Year Boycott
The singer pulled his music in 2022 after taking issue with Joe Rogan’s controversial podcast.
Neil Young has made his way back to Spotify. The folk rock singer pulled his music from the platform in 2022 after Spotify published episodes of Joe Rogan‘s podcast, which Young says promoted vaccine misinformation.
This week, he shared a blog post detailing his decision to return to Spotify now that the Joe Rogan Experience is no longer exclusive with the streamer. The podcast is also available to stream through Apple and Amazon. Young wrote that he can’t ditch those platforms as well because “[his] music would have very little streaming outlets” for fans to listen.
In the same post, Young referred to Spotify as the “#1 streamer of low res music in the world” and lamented that music on the streamer is “less quality” than what was originally made.
He also shouted out Quobuz and Tidal offering his songs in hi-res and encouraged the platform to improve its system. Spotify announced that it was going to build a hi-res listening tier a few years ago but never actually executed the project.
“Spotify, you can do it! Really be #1 in all ways. You have the music and listeners!!!! Start with a limited Hi res tier and build from there!” he wrote.
