SF1OG’s Berlin Fashion Week Show Was a Nostalgic Exploration of School Years
In conversation with Dr. Martens, the brand unveils its latest FW24 collection.
Burgeoning fashion label SF1OG presented its forthcoming Fall/Winter 2024 collection at last week’s Berlin Fashion Week.
Established in 2019, the Berlin-based brand has garnered acclaim for pushing the boundaries of creativity through experimental design while focusing on the importance of sustainability with its handcrafted garments using surplus materials. Also known for showcasing its collections in extraordinary places, its latest nostalgia-evoking FW24 presentation — supported by iconic footwear label Dr. Martens — was displayed in a school gym hall.
The concept was initially awarded by the Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises, and the Fashion Council. Drawing from personal school experiences in former East Germany, SF1OG’s creative director Rosa Marga Dahl alongside casting director Kyra Sophie Wilhemseder aimed to transcend generations through the show’s aesthetic. Speaking to its partner Dr. Martens after the show, Dahl explains, “There are so many specific memories every one of us has revolving around school. Some bad, some good. But it is the time when we can dream and choose who we want to be.”
Dedicated to rich storytelling and holding value to authenticity, the decision to showcase at the Ernst-Reuter School in Berlin-Mitte — located in an underfunded district — was made to offer a different perspective of the school. “By doing this event there is the chance to maybe show students a new side of their school but also to let the school shine in a different light,” Dahl explains.
The school agreed to work with the brand to change the way its students are perceived as well as how they perceive themselves with one student cast to walk the show while other students were in the audience. Speaking on the collection and casting, she says, “We did not want anyone to really play a role, we tried to find people that actually are the characters we imagined.”
SF1OG’s artisanal craftsmanship approach is present throughout every collection, and this release is no different. The garments provided a modern, playful take on archetypal school clothes by introducing pleated skirts, ties, and unevenly striped shirts whilst experimenting with textures and volumes – all complemented by Dr. Martens’ classic silhouettes. Honing in on its continued commitment to sustainable design, every piece is crafted from “a lot of antique and dead-stock fabrics” such as repurposed linen, leather, and other materials which also “takes part in storytelling itself.”
Community is at the core of SF1OG and its concept, aligning with the values Dr. Martens champions. As an official show sponsor and long-time supporter, the label created content on-site in close collaboration with the SF1OG team to portray some of the talents and designs under their rebellious lens.
