Devin B. Johnson's 'Ritual of Welcome' Offers Nuggets of Wisdom

Devin B. Johnson’s Ritual of Welcome marks his fifth solo show with Nicodim and third in their Los Angeles gallery. The exhibition showcases eight figurative paintings, five abstract pieces, and four works on paper—each blending elements of wisdom, experience and growth. Johnson’s work acts as a visual incantation, reconfiguring familiar symbols into rituals of exploration and acceptance.
Johnson reflects on the concept of legacy, stating, “It’s about taking what’s learned from the past—those nuggets of wisdom—and using them to move forward.” His use of cars, especially older models, symbolizes this forward momentum, illustrating how lessons from history can fuel progress. His art weaves these themes together, offering viewers a sense of discovery, both personal and collective.
