Swiss clockmaker L’Epée 1839 has unveiled a new timepiece inspired by the dragon in alignment with the Lunar Year of the Dragon. The timepiece is designed to celebrate both the Chinese cultural icon and also L’Epée 1839’s horological expertise.

The dragon, a revered symbol in Chinese culture representing power, strength and prosperity, is integrated into the design. Every aspect of the dragon’s anatomy, from its curves and detailed scales to its majestic horns and lobster-like eyes, are reflected in the clock’s intricate mechanics. The clock’s movement, the Swiss Made Caliber 1853, comprises 124 parts, all meticulously assembled by L’Epée 1839’s master watchmakers.

Notably, the piece features two dragons with either golden or palladium scales, coiled protectively around the gear chain, the heart of the clock. Their mirrored postures and serpentine figures embody the essence of the dragon’s spirit, meant to signify guardianship and strength.

Beyond acting as a functional clock, the timepiece also represents a kinetic work of art. L’Epée 1839 has adapted the clock’s movement to fit the shape of a dragon, creating a piece that is both visually stunning and technically sophisticated. The escapement and gears mimic the dragon’s movements, while the mainspring mirrors its inner vitality.

The work is limited to an edition of 88 pieces, available only by request via its official site and has been produced in three different color variations, including Gold Plated, Palladium Plated and Red Lacquered — each priced at $11,458 USD.
