Polar Lights Inform Karmuel Young's "Project 08 Aurora" Collection
A sequel to the red-hot Sahara Desert inspired “Project 07: Mirage” collection.
Serving as a sequel to the heat haze of the “Project 07: Mirage” collection, Karmuel Young has now returned with a range inspired by the gelid glaciers of Hornafjörður. The unworldly polar lights and the designer’s own dream-like experience at the Blue Lagoon provide the outlook of the collection. Additionally, allusions to René Magritte’s surrealist masterpieces are expressed through a fusion of perspectives of reality.
Magritte’s Galconda and The Son of Man paintings reflect the sartorial choices of Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti suit fabric constructed formal and casual garments. Distinct styles include the Aviator Jacket made from a striped wool-cashmere blend, Trucker Jacket, and Five-Pocket Trousers rendered in denim effect wool traced with visible stitching.
Additional standouts include the Trapezium XY-Plane Shirt and Calfskin Leather Tie paired with the fluid Giant Hoodie and Cuboid Sweatpants. “Project 08” also features leather objects, a decorative egg, a cigarette case, and a drawstring hood. While a continued collaboration with MOUCCM results in sterling silver jewellery-like rings with iridescent moonstones reminiscent of the ever-changing northern lights.
The colors are furthered with the Icelandic fjords color padded Bulk Bomber Jacket, waterproof Trench Coat, and Re-Edition Levi’s 501 Jeans overprinted in contrasting white.
