Fans Launch a Free-To-Play Unity Remake of Bethesda's 'The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall'
The 1996 title is the studio’s largest game with over 15,000 unique locations.

Bethesda has put out a number of hit titles over the decades, from Starfield to Fallout 76. One of its largest games, however, arrived in the year of 1996, just 10 years after the studio was founded.
The sequel to 1994’s The Elder Scrolls: Arena, The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall is Bethesda’s biggest game to date. According to Kotaku, 2023’s Starfield has 1,000 planets for players to explore, while Daggerfall has 15,000 unique locations to explore.
Now, an ambitious group of tech-savvy fans has issued a rebuild of Daggerfall’s sprawling continent of Tamriel.
Created by a fan collective known as the Daggerfall Workshop, the project is a remake of Daggerfall using the Unity engine. Per the game’s page, the remake is aptly titled Daggerfall Unity 1.0 and was in development for several years leading up to its launch on December 31.
Developers recommend that players run Daggerfall Unity on Windows, Linux or MacOS with a minimum processor of the Intel i3 or one of the equivalent capabilities. They also say players should have a minimum of 2GB of storage.
Daggerfall Unity 1.0 offers the option to play with updated graphics or in a retro mode. With Unity, graphics have updated lighting and player controls are overall smoother. Best of all, the game is entirely free for anyone to download and play.
The Daggerfall Workshop also says that the remake has an “active mode community” with hundreds of mods, ranging from new quests and guilds to new worlds and other game formulas. Check out the Daggerfall Unity 1.0 webpage.
