Carhartt WIP’s Latest Feature Film Lands in Streets of New York and Los Angeles
Capturing the ‘Precious’ moments in U.S. skateboarding culture.
In a new film directed by Joaquim Bayle, Carhartt WIP continues its exploration of modern skateboarding, capturing the life of skaters based in Los Angeles and New York.
The 15-minute feature follows on from INSIDE OUT, a full-length film shot by Bayle for Carhartt WIP in 2022. Showcasing skate scenes in Europe such as Madrid, Milan, London, and Paris, it introduced audiences to the more emotive side of skateboarding by exploring the calm moments before a big skate.
For the latest installment, titled Precious, Bayle brings the lens to the brand’s skate team in the U.S. who glide through their local areas in search of new challenges. As they grapple with the journey, the footage highlights how the intensity of their emotions makes skaters uniquely disparate from the onlookers around them.
“Now that I understand skateboarding a little more, I wanted to pay tribute to its subversive and poetic form,” shares Bayle as he reflects on his relationship with the sport. “It’s a precious feeling that I had when I started skateboarding and which, as I have gotten older, I’ve tended to forget.”
With similar stylistic camera work to the previous film, the latest installment adopts an atmospheric feel, opening in the suburban neighborhoods of Los Angeles with a series of lo-fi clips capturing skaters in the east-coast sun, and later contrasted with the concrete backdrop of New York. Throughout the film, these clips are intersected with voice recordings, board-on-brick sound bites and a range of music genres to bring the stories to life.
