Passing through airports isn’t necessarily the inspiring of experiences, unless you’re Aleksej Iskos. The idea for his new lamp, designed for Muuto, actually came to him from a billboard at a Copenhagen terminal.

The billboard in question was softly glowing, with a textile-like material stretched over a light source. Its lasting impression on the Ukranian designer is evident in the final form of the Calm Lamp, which similarly emits a soft glow against the wall on which it’s mounted.

In addition, the designer looked to nature. “Scandinavian design is partially character- ized by its great respect for nature in terms of materials and light; something that I wanted to infuse the Calm Wall Lamp with, creating a light that isn’t tamed but instead has an or- ganic flow,” he says.

Dimmable and adjustable, the lamp can be altered to suit mood or environment. Similarly to the billboard, Iskos used textile to diffuse the light, which softens the intesnsity and creates a gradient across its surface. A crisp edge is created through the use of a matte rubber band frame, available in black, grey, or orange.

“It brings a soft and calming yet powerful presence to a space,” Iskos adds. “It is functional, but also profound as it emulates daylight from dawn to dusk.”

The Calm Lamp forms part of Muuto’s new launches for September 2023, and is priced at £725 GBP (approximately $906 USD). For more design, check out the ultimate guide to buying vintage Eames furniture, according to the experts.
