Artist Shohei Ochiai, known for his nostalgic and youth-like paintings is set to hold his largest solo exhibition to date titled “This is OCHIAI SHOHEI.” The event is set to run from August 26 to September 23 at the Tokyo-based gallery YUKIKOMIZUTANI.

The artist, born in 1988, attended and graduated from Tama Art University, majoring in product design and working as a comedian prior to becoming a full-time artist. It wasn’t until 2018 that he began to pursue painting full-time, with themes of nostalgia being the works he’s become most well-known for.

These works include items like early gaming systems, Pokémon playing cards, sneakers like the Jordan 1 Chicago, snacks like Oreos and much more. He doesn’t just paint these works as is or in a photorealistic way, instead, Ochiai’s style is more exaggerated and comes across almost like a faint memory. Many of his works feature a range of primary colors and unique, often distorted shaping, all presented from an obscure two-dimensional perspective.

Some of Ochiai’s most notable commercial works include visuals for the artist Xiangyu and the bands “Yonawo” and “TENDOUJI.” He’s also worked with the Pharrell Williams-sponsored digital auction house “JOOPITER“, providing artwork as well as helping to expand the brand’s activity in Japan.

In addition to this being the artist’s largest and longest-running solo exhibition to date, a documentary is also slated to be shown, going behind the scenes to show viewers the creative process behind the works, as well as the reveal of his first three-dimensional work ever.
