KENZO's FW23 Campaign Explores NIGO's Native Japan
Titled “EAST MEETS WEST,” the imagery offers a juxtaposition between the brand’s cosmo designs and two Japanese cities.
KENZO’s Fall/Winter 2023 campaign looks to acquaint its community with the personal universe that shaped NIGO in Japan. Titled “EAST MEETS WEST,” the sartorial delivery centers a contrast between KENZO’s cosmopolitan silhouettes and the creative director’s native country.
Shot by Keizo Kitajima, and with moving imagery from Frank Lebon, the campaign champions the cross-cultural identity that the Maison possesses, in a juxtaposition of Osaka’s melting pot and Kyoto’s historical grounds. At its core, the Fall/Winter 2023 collection reflects an “interaction between the streets of Japan, America and England mirrored in the memory of the youth-quake of the Swinging Sixties,” per the brand. Here, the campaign plants that ideology into the contemporary youth scenes of two Japanese cities.
In a bevy of street portraits, Kitajima puts a series of commonplace exchanges between city dwellers and their surroundings in focus. VERNON, a member of the K-pop group SEVENTEEN and a brand ambassador for KENZO, appears in the campaign, and NIGO himself makes a cameo, wearing a striped blue shirt.
“Between Kyoto and Osaka,” KENZO wrote on Instagram alongside the video campaign.
