In 1972, the US enacted the Title IX policy to level the field for people of all genders and backgrounds playing sports in any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. While the equity and diversity in sports has greatly improved across the country since then, particularly within women’s sports, much is still to be done to truly deliver on the promise. A new group exhibition at The Hole‘s Bowery and Tribeca locations uses this policy as the conceptual framework to speak on the bridge between sports and art.

Title IX will feature an array of contemporary artists whose differing approaches to painting and sculpture are united through an equal attempt to spotlight Title IX’s impacts and shortcomings, while examining the joys, politics and power of sports. Artists include Gao Hang, Elena Redmond and Julius Hofmann, who in their own aesthetic, comment on the sexualization of the female body within the history of sports.

Additional standouts include a multi-media work by Nikko Washington, in which the Chicago-based artist juxtaposes a moody portrait inside a canvas frame with actual boxing gloves dangling from the base. Elsewhere, Quinci Baker‘s The Hindrance video work features tennis phenom, Venus Williams, who was penalized by an official for her beads falling out her hair. The artwork probes into the notion that, despite Black athletes historically showing dominance in sports, such as swimming, tennis, golf and gymnastics, the sports and the culture that surround it continue to lack multicultural representation.

As with all The Hole’s shows, the space has been specially designed to immerse audiences according to the theme, which has translated into a faux-basketball court presentation. Title IX will be on view at The Hole’s Bowery and Tribeca galleries in New York until August 27. See the full list of exhibiting artists below.

Across the pond, there’s a new exhibition in London that fuses the work of Brian Eno and Dan Flavin.
