Six decades after its formation in Hawthorne, California, The Beach Boys are still active today. The iconic rock band has carved out its place in history thanks to its unique, surf-inspired sound.

Before The Beach Boys became a household name, they were merely a trio of brothers, joined by a friend and their cousin, practicing out of a garage. A new book, entitled The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys, will tell the story of the band in their own words.

Told through the words of Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson and Bruce Johnston, the anthology will chart the ascent of one of the biggest bands in U.S. history. The anthology will touch on earlier years beginning with the release of the debut single “Surfin’” to the legendary 1980 Independence Day concert at Washington D.C.’s National Mall.

The book was compiled with unlimited access to Capital Records’ archive. It contains behind-the-scenes imagery, outtakes from recording sessions for Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) and Pet Sounds and concert photography from band’s first European tour, along with tour posters, handwritten notes and newspaper clippings.

“There’s love in the music and people can relate to the love, regardless of whether you’re 2 years old or 92 years old,” said Wilson about the anthology. “For me, music is about love. Love is the message I want to share. I hope people feel that in my music. That makes the hard work worth it.”

Only 500 copies of The Beach Boys by The Beach Boys will be printed. The book is slated to release in 2024 via Genesis Publications.
