The Recording Academy Announces That Only Humans Can Be Nominated For GRAMMY Awards
As the music industry continues to crackdown on AI-generated material.
The Recording Academy has announced a new rule banning artificial intelligence (AI) creators from being nominated for a GRAMMY Award.
According to Consequence, the rule was passed in May at the Academy’s Board of Trustees meeting and states that “[o]nly human creators are eligible to be submitted for consideration” and that “[a] work that contains no human authorship is not eligible in any Category.”
However, if a piece of work utilizes both human authorship and AI, only the human authorship component is eligible. In addition, it “must be meaningful and more than de minimis,” with the Academy defining “de minimis” as “lacking significance or importance; so minor as to merit disregard.” Authors who solely offer any AI material fused into a work will also not be eligible for nomination.
In related news, Paul McCartney announced that he will be using AI to create a “final” Beatles song.
