Juice Wrld and Cordae Unite on Lyrical Lemonade's "Doomsday"
Alongside a nostalgic music video featuring original footage.
Cole Bennett has kicked off summer 2023 with a bang. Hot off the heels of his short film release last Saturday, and with Summer Smash 2023 coming up this weekend, Bennett’s Lyrical Lemonade production company has released Juice Wrld and Cordae‘s “Doomsday” track — which they recorded together back in 2019 — as the first single off Bennett’s forthcoming compilation album.
“Doomsday” sees Juice and Cordae exchange witty bars over the instrumental from Eminem’s “Role Model,” a standout, Dr.Dre-produced cut from The Slim Shady LP, Em’s classic 1999 album. Before the rapping, however, the video opens with a nod to Eminem himself, while Cordae and Juice mumble conversationally – “Juice is eating ice cream, with lots of caramel … I just had an ice cream sandwich, M&Ms, over an Eminem beat, ironically.”
Cordae pops his head out of a yellow Lyrical Lemonade curtain to begin the track; after his first lines, he dips his head back into the curtain and reappears as Juice Wrld for Juice’s lines. Bennett plays with this seamless transformation concept throughout the entire video, as Cordae alternates mesmerizingly between himself and Juice Wrld. Flow-wise, the track is just as seamless, as the rappers’ lively bars and smart worldplay build off one another.
The music video is equally as nostalgic as it is trippy. “Doomsday” is not a posthumous track stitched together manually – Juice and Cordae wrote this song together and intended to drop it as such. The latter half of the video shows the original footage of the two rappers in the studio finalizing the production, and even includes what Juice intended for the music video’s visuals.
