BMW Says Bring Back Shooting Brakes With Its Concept Touring Coupé

The Z4-based concept harks back to legends like the Z3 M Coupé.

The shooting brake is back, sort of, with BMW‘s Concept Touring Coupé. Unveiled during Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2023, the concept car harks back to years gone by when coachbuilders from Europe were pioneering the shooting brake look — think the ultra-rare 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB 4 Shooting Brake, anything made by Pininfarina or Zagato, and of course, the BMW Z3 M Coupé.

BMW now presents the future of shooting brakes in the form of the concept you see above. Its looks are unmistakably passed down the generational line, looking like a sharper, contemporary version of the Z3 M Coupé from 1998, as the car is in fact based on the marque’s current Z4 sports car.

Furthermore, the car echoes the German manufacturer’s history, looking at models like the BMW 328 Touring Coupé that won the Mille Miglia endurance race back in 1940, or the “Touring”-spec BMW 02 Series of the ’70s.

In true shooting brake form, the concept features a two-seater closed-top construction held within gorgeously-penned bodywork. Shooting brakes are meant to blend luxury with sports, and the concept delivers with a three-liter inline-six engine, 20” and 21” rims, and a custom interior coming courtesy of the Italian producer Poltrona Frau. In the rear, luggage is supplied by the Schedoni leather workshop from Modena.

For now, BMW is keeping the car as a concept — but we have a sneaking suspicion that any automotive fan would not be opposed to this being put into production. Take a look at the BMW Concept Touring Coupé above.

Elsewhere in the automotive world, Hypebeast recently got behind the wheel of the equally beautiful Ferrari Roma.
