TAG Heuer is penning another chapter in its storied existence, with two new models that blend modernity and performance. The brand’s Carerra model is celebrating its 60th anniversary – the original TAG Heuer Carrera was born out of young Jack Heuer’s love for racing, as he was inspired by the Carrera Panamericana race held in Mexico.

In the 1950s, the Carrera Panamericana was a legendary race, drawing attention through its dangerous roads and daring speeds. Jack Heuer was enamored by the story of the notable race and decided to name a new line of wristwatch chronographs after it. The race reflected exactly what Mr. Heuer wanted the timepiece to embody — boldness and tradition.

In 1963, Heuer debuted the Heuer Carrera, which showed off a signature style that blends practicality, beauty, and aspiration. The watch now has gone on to grace the wrists of trendsetters and celebrities such as Mick Jagger and Ryan Gosling, so it was second nature for the brand to refresh the model through a contemporary lens.

In celebration of the Carerra’s sixtieth anniversary, TAG Heuer introduces the “Glassbox” Carrera Chronograph and “Glassbox” Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon. Both new models have been reworked to improve form and function, boasting stainless steel cases topped with sapphire crystals. Derived from the domed hesalite crystals atop the Heuer Carrera models of the 1970s, these new crystal faces incorporate a subtle curve so they can be read from a wide range of angles.

Other new design aspects include new pushers and calfskin leather straps. The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph comes in two versions. One displays a sleek, black and silver “reverse panda” dial, informed by some of the most coveted ‘60s-era Heuer models — the reference 3147 Dato 12 and the reference 2447 NS. The other available updated Carrera Chronograph model features a signature blue face with a deep blue calfskin leather strap.

The “Glassbox” TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Tourbillon is a first of its kind for the brand, standing in as a graceful sister watch to the previously released Carerra tourbillon timepieces with larger, more athletic case designs. This new style shares many qualities with the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph, though its dial is elevated with an aperture at 6 o’clock that shows off a tourbillon cage and a 42 mm case. It is powered by the brand’s in-house tourbillon movement, the TH20-09, which is backed by a 65-hour power reserve. Design-wise, the watch boasts deep azure blue subdials, vivid orange detailing over each hour marker, and a triangular seconds hand.

Inside each of the new non-tourbillon timepieces you can find an improved Heuer 02 movement, called TH20-00, evolved for advanced operation. This revolutionary TH20-00 movement now features an oscillating weight with bidirectional winding and elevated finishings.

TAG Heuer’s new Carrera “Glassbox” models honor its past while paving the way for the brand’s future. Both models come with a five-year warranty and can be purchased beginning April 2023, on tagheuer.com.
