Vaquera Returns to Its Subversive Roots for FW23

Straying away from the commercial route with an uneasy collection that boasts a punk rock attitude.

New York-based label Vaquera has returned to Paris Fashion Week as one of the first brands to open the seasonal calendar in the French capital. Led by Patric DiCaprio and Bryn Taubensee, the design duo behind the brand has endlessly evolved since its establishment in 2013, forming a brand to watch under the eyes of global fashion lovers.

Last season, Vaquera delivered a romantic affair at Dover Street Market‘s local residency and paid tribute to Caribbean sailors while celebrating its home ground with looted US flag dresses. Although Vaquera has chosen to step into a more commercial landscape by producing fan-favorite denim fabricated by DSM, the brand’s Fall/Winter 2023 collection is anything but.

For FW23, DiCaprio and Taubensee opted for their usual eccentric route, deviating from salesfloor attire entirely. Relentless and unconventional, the collection was pure punk and delivered its first look with a bare-chested model sporting a patch-like bralette slipping off her body. Next, loose-fitting trousers with contest stitching followed a cascading zipped jacket and silver footwear. Undoubtedly edgy, Vaquera previewed a series of spiked ensembles with rock ‘n roll flair, including dangerous leather jackets matched with shredded denim skirts and sharp wrist pads.

The collection’s uneasy nature was equally met with laidback pairings, such as faded blazers, cropped outerwear, and silk bomber sets. The brand’s signature denim looks were delivered as an assortment of casual attire, while fishnet bodysuits clung to models’ bodies alongside veiled headgear and translucent interpretations. Finally, Vaquera concluded its FW23 showcase with seven black-and-white looks that walked on a suggestive line of matrimony. The looks saw plastic poncho dresses followed by fuzzy fairytale gowns and sequinned frocks for the gothic bride in you.
