Fans of Lana Del Rey have been eagerly awaiting her latest record, Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd, the follow-up to 2021’s Blue Banisters. In tandem with announcing the new album back in December, the singer also shared its lead title track in a surprise release.
In the months since, Del Rey has been relatively quiet, at least up until now. She has returned with a new single called “A&W,” co-written and produced with frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff.
Clocking in at an epic seven minutes, Del Rey introduces “A&W” with floating vocals reflecting on the lost innocence of her childhood.
“I haven’t done a cartwheel since I was nine / I haven’t seen my mother in a long, long time,” she sings.
As the song progresses, however, the singer segues into a suggestive anecdote about her adulthood. A little after the halfway mark, soft piano melodies turn into a staticky beat and a warped version of Del Rey’s iconic falsetto sound.
“Call ’em up, come in to my bedroom / Ended up, we f*** on the hotеl floor,” she croons. “It’s not about having someone to love mе anymore / This is the experience of being an American whore.”
Lana Del Rey’s new album Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd is due for release on March 24 via Interscope and Polydor Records. Stream “A&W” everywhere now.
