With four Thor films under his belt, Taika Waititi has announced that he is ready to step away from the famous Marvel franchise. In a recent conversation with Business Insider, the director spoke about whether or not he is planning on making a fifth Thor film.

While there is currently not a fifth film in the studio’s upcoming plans, Waititi commented on the recent social media rumors that there is a Thor 5 currently in development, “I wouldn’t know if that’s accurate. I know that I won’t be involved…I’m going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for.” In terms of the other projects, Waititi has a string of non-Marvel projects he is currently developing. He said in regards to a Star Wars film, “It’s still marinating. I’ve been writing it.”

Talking about his current slate of projects and how Marvel is not on his mind at the moment, Waititi explains, “So that’s six, seven years gone. I’d imagine another Thor would be a lot sooner than that…But I love Marvel, I love working with them. I love Chris.” He added, “I would never feel like they are cheating on me. We’re in an open relationship, and it’s like if they want to see other people, I’m happy for that. I’d still get back into bed with them one day.” Over the summer, said, “I don’t want to continue to do it until people are so exhausted that they roll their eyes when they see me come on the screen as that character. If an audience wants to see it, and if there’s something that we believe is exciting and fun, then great. I’ve loved being able to reinvent that character a few times. I don’t have the answer yet, but I would love to try and [figure out] how we can do that again and keep it a little unpredictable.”

It remains to be seen if Marvel will be releasing details on a fifth Thor film anytime soon.
