The Piil Treehouse is an Ethereal Abode, Hidden in the Estonian Wilderness

If Arsenit’s pre-fabricated treehouse wasn’t nine meters tall, it would be incredibly easy to miss, tucked away in the heart of the lush Estonian forest. Taken from the Estonian word ‘piiluma’ –  which translates to ‘peeking/looking’ – the Piil Treehouse is a cozy and compact 19 sqm hideaway, which boasts picturesque views of the surrounding wilderness.

Piil stands on one “leg”, wrapped in hit-and-miss pine cladding, suspended over a greenery-surrounded terrace. An open-air “living room” remains sheltered from rain and snow, whereas the raised bedroom literally immerses you within the forest, with nothing but pine tree tops and branches in your sightline.

Enter Piil through its discreet door to clean, calming white-oak-washed interiors. Complete with a king-size bed, two working tables, a kitchenette, concealed storage, and a sizable bathroom with a top-lit shower, Piil’s interior design sees the interplay of levels and surfaces – a table can be a chair, and vice versa. A vertical timber paneling and enchanting natural light via skylight along the immersive hammock mezzanine, provide the residence with its authentic treehouse feel. An air-source heat pump with MVHR provides ventilation, heating, cooling, and hot water throughout most of the year, aided by additional support from an integrated radiator or external condenser.

Finished from untreated, thermally modified pine by Thermory, Piil’s external aesthetic requires little maintenance; over time, the pine will weather to a silver-grey color, allowing the building to blend in with its surroundings through all four seasons. Four Piil models are slated to go up throughout the Estonian landscape, with each Piil intentionally placed at its respective location.

Elsewhere in the design space, have a closer look at this one-off kitchen, fully crafted from discarded materials.
