Following an official collaboration with PUMA for “BORO Tabis,” Taiwanese shoe custom shop Rifare Co. now reveals a custom pair of New Balance “2002R TABI made for designer Salehe Bembury.

While the split-toe design is now often associated with Maison Margiela, the origins of the Tabi toe stretch back as early as 15th century Japan. The original Tabi socks were fitted for thonged footwear such as traditional Geta and Zouri sandals.

For Rifare’s take on the 2002R, the silhouette is clad in a mix of choppy natural leather and faded blue and silver suede panels similar to that of NB’s in-line “Protection Pack” offerings. Details include the separated Tabi toes, an added heel pull tab for convenience, and exposed foam tongue tabs. Completing the design below are the 2002R’s signature N-ERGY midsoles equipped with two-tone ABZORB SBS heel cushioning.

Take a closer look at Rifare’s remade New Balance “2002R TABI” below. Featured products and inquiry contacts can be found on the company’s website.
