Oprah Winfrey is slated to star in Tyler Perry’s forthcoming Netflix film, Six Triple Eight, alongside Kerry Washington and Sam Waterson.

Washington is on board to executive produce the movie, which recounts the largely untold story of the only all-Back, all-female World War II battalion that was tasked with organizing and delivering three years’ worth of unsent mail. Perry, who is directing and producing the project, wrote the screenplay based on a WWII History Magazine article by Kevin M. Hymel about the 6888th Postal Directory Battalion, which was comprised of 855 Black women.

The film, which has already begun production, also stars Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonuga and Jay Reeves, as well as Jeanté Godlock, Moriah Brown, Baadja-Lyne Odums, Gregg Sulkin, Dean Norris and Susan Sarandon.

Netflix has not yet shared information regarding the aforementioned actors’ roles, though the streamer did share the following synopsis: “Facing discrimination, unfamiliar land, and a war-torn country, they persevered and sorted over 17 million pieces of mail, reconnecting American soldiers with their families and loved ones back home. The motto that kept them going each day was one they created themselves: ‘No Mail, Low Morale.’ The women of the 6888 weren’t just delivering mail, they were delivering hope.”

Notably, on March 14, 2022, President Joe Biden signed a bill that honored the women of the 6888th Postal Directory Battalion with the Congressional Gold Medal, Congress’ highest accolade.

Six Triple Eight will mark Perry’s fourth film for Netflix, following A Fall From GraceA Madea Homecoming and A Jazzman’s Blues. Netflix has not yet shared a release date for the movie.
