Sony has just expanded on its lineup of full-frame mirrorless cameras with the world’s first remote pan-tilt-zoom setup. Giving users a new level of freedom and versatility, the FR7’s ability to go where no camera operator can go as well as its programmability, make it one of the more unique cameras on the market.

“The cinematic look and feel is rapidly becoming the norm in broadcasting and live production as it opens up new ways to tell a narrative,” said Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “In parallel, over the last 2 years, we’ve seen a steep rise in content created remotely or in small locations where access is difficult. At Sony, we are always listening to our customers. We are thrilled to announce the FR7 that combines the flexibility of a standard PTZ camera with stunning visuals through advanced cinematic features.”

The FR7 has the same cinematic quality as the FX6 (35mm full-frame CMOS image sensor Exmor R) but is merged with a robotic cradle that enables remote control operation for smooth pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) camera work. Pan and tilt speed can be continuously varied from 0.02 degrees per second to 60 degrees per second with a pan angle range of -170° to +170° and a tilt angle range of -30° to +195°.

Features for the FR7 include a built-in electronic variable ND filter, Sony’s E-mount system, an ISO sensitivity up to 409,600, 4K 120fps shooting, and dual SD/CFexpress Type A slots. Those interested in adding this to their production can expect it to release in November for $9,699.99 USD, or $12,199.99 USD for the SELP28135G lens kit. A CIB-PCM1 ceiling bracket will be available for $119.99 USD.
