Matthieu Blazy continues to live up to his design prowess for the Spring/Summer 2023 Bottega Veneta collection at Milan Fashion Week. Arguably one of the most anticipated shows of the season, Blazy did not disappoint, capturing many walks of life in a concept he calls “the world in a small room.”

To bring his vision to the runway, Blazy enlisted the 82-year-old Italian design pioneer Gaetano Pesce to create a site-specific installation featuring colorful patterns on the floor created by pouring resin on the ground. 400 unique chairs were built for the crowd to take their seats and enjoy the show, giving those who attended a packaged experience. Blazy told Vogue, “The idea was to represent different characters and put them in the landscape of Gaetano.”

In layman terms, Blazy essentially wanted to create a dynamic collection that was fit for all occasions. Picking up from last season, the opening looks saw the models dripped in denim, debuting more casual pieces fit for looking stylish doing every day tasks. The legendary Kate Moss was amongst one of the models who opened the show, dressed in a pair of baggy jeans and a flannel shirt that required 12 layers of print to achieve just the right color Blazy wanted. The initial looks set the narrative for Bottega’s vision of casual comfort, before addressing more dramatic silhouettes that showed off the evolving aesthetic for SS23.

Truly a collection that features a look for any occasion no matter how formal or informal, Blazy continues to showcase his highly technical workmanship in this combined presentation of womenswear and menswear. Catching the eye of fashion enthusiasts, the menswear looks commanded attention with its funnel necks, double collars and overall pristine tailoring. Adding to the unmissable silhouettes are the exaggerated patterns including a faux fox fur print seen on suits and evening dresses that seems to be an ironic nod to traditional luxury. Blazy is modernizing the classic trenchcoat look with ample layering, elevating the silhouette with the textures created using patent leather. Colorful leather pants are paired with oversized blazers to give the traditional formal look a youthful reflection.
