Steele + Edith Finds Peace in Nostalgic Foods for SS23
Dreaming of simpler times.

As another season rolls around, the world at large continues to deal with fluctuating COVID regulations between nations, leaving many anxious and wary about the idea of international travel. Daydreaming of an escape outside of provincial Alhambra, Steele + Edith founders Brian Tu and Wesley Tsai find respite in the search for nostalgic foods.
As long-time gourmands, the duo sees food as a symbol of community and compassion. For them, that meant simple childhood memories such as “a bowl of congee when sick, fresh squeezed orange juice when parched, and bites of lychee jelly straight from the local 99 Ranch Market.” Riding on this idea, Steele + Edith’s upcoming Spring/Summer “JIA BUNG!” collection reaches back into the roots of the kitchen and pulls chef collars and work uniforms into the contemporary light.
Collection pieces draw from familiar childhood foods, featuring dumpling-style pleats adorning the jackets found in herringbone twill, rugged sashiko, and organza. Work jackets arrive in floral transparent materials and silk button-ups serve as buttery base layers. Japanese gyotaku prints of sculpin fish are splashed across suit lapels and ankles, dragonfruit red is spread across a range of wool selves and trousers, and collaged prints of nostalgic snacks, beverages, and seasonings work their way onto blazers and puffed chef vests.
