Samsung has just unveiled its 990 Pro series of NVMe solid state drives and the company claims that it’ll push the boundaries of maximum speeds possible within the current PCIe 4.0 architecture. With sequential write and read speeds of 7,450 MB/s and 6,900 MB/s respectively, the Korean tech giant says that the new 990 Pro lineup can perform up to 55 percent better than the current 980 Pro series, with those speeds nearing the limit of the current interface before we move into the PCIe 5.0 era.

Random read and write speeds have also increased to 1,400K and 1,550 input/output operations per second, while its power efficiency has also been greatly increased by a whopping 50% over its predecessor. The latter is partly due to the new nickel coating on the re-designed controller and Samsung’s very own Dynamic Thermal Guard technology to keep the SSD running within optimal temperatures. If you’re looking for something that can push even harder, there’ll also be a variant offered with its own heatsink and RGB lighting.

As for availability, the new 990 Pro series will arrive this October with 1TB and 2TB models going for $180 USD and $310 USD respectively. If you’re looking for something with more capacity, Samsung will also launch a 4TB model next year, although no pricing has been provided for that just yet.

Elsewhere in tech, Sony’s PS VR2 will arrive in early 2023.
