The first ever single-family residence to have been completed by architect Ray Kappe has gone up for sale in Glendale, California. Priced at $2,189,000 USD, the “Gordon & Hildred Goetschel House” was completed by Kappe in 1954, and is filled with details that became distinct signatures for the architect throughout the rest of his career.

Kappe, renowned for his association with the Modernism movement, crafted the three-bedroom home for a location on Glendale’s Mesa Lila road. The architect became known for his contributions to hillside family homes in California, and now, Sotheby’s International Realty is putting his first example to market. Inside, the home feels vast and spacious. Its wide windows allow for expansive views of the distant landscapes, and its redwood cladding helps it to blend in with surrounding nature.

Bringing it firmly into the present day, the property has just undergone a complete restoration – from its systems to its finishes. Original detailing lost over time has been reinstated – such as textural door handles overhaul of systems and restoration of finishes. Wood cladding on the property’s exterior is continued through to its interiors and is paired with tasteful colors and cork floors. A set of stairs leads out to the surrounding Verdugo Woodlands, which are thick with California Live Oak trees. Location-wise, the property is nearby to La Canada Flintridge, and just a 15-minute drive to Silver Lake or Echo Park.

If midcentury modern isn’t your vibe, perhaps you’d prefer this home designed by acclaimed Viennese architects Coop Himmelb(l)au, which is set to be listed by Engel & Völkers in the coming weeks.
