Listings: Coop Himmelb(l)au's First Home in the United States Is Headed to Market

Named the “Tectonic House.”

A home designed by acclaimed Viennese architects Coop Himmelb(l)au is set for listing. Located just steps away from Abbott Kinney and Venice Beach, the Tectonic House was first built in 2001 and is sized at 2,522 sq-ft with four bedrooms, 3.5 baths, and three levels.

The structure sees the Austrian firm’s signature torqued geometric shapes as the vertical home stretches towards the sky. Constructed with two steel-framed towers, the house incorporates materials like cement, corrugated steel, and glass panels. Tectonic House’s unique vertical tower structure acts as a chimney to pull air at the base of the building to vent fresh air through the openings on the roof — eliminating the need for air conditioning.

One of the district features of the home can be found in the plywood art installation that runs from the floor and weaves up to the walls of the home. Its current owners — screenwriters Lillian Yu and J. Stewart Burns — titled the installation Parasite as a depiction of their evolution and attachment within the space. Engel & Völkers Santa Monica is set to release the listing details in the coming weeks.
