Danish design brand Muuto has opened the doors to its first-ever retail space in its hometown of Copenhagen. This marks the opening of a third store for the brand, following locations in Paris and Sweden. The Muuto Copenhagen store is located in the heart of the city, on the Store Regnegade street. Its interiors have been created by the brand’s in-house spatial design team, who were inspired by the architecture of the building occupied by the store.

“The architecture is distinctly turn of the century and the space has a more of an apartment feel than our other stores,” says Head of Spatial Design Jill Ramona Sundqvist. “Therefore, we built it around the notion of ‘Muuto at Home’, blending the border between home and retail.”

With this concept in mind, and aiming to appeal to a wider customer base, the designers have built the store around two separate ‘apartments’ that show contrasting styles and ways of living. One side of the design caters to those living in small apartments. Furniture on show is intended to maximise the amount of space, with art and objects bringing colour to the walls and surfaces. For those living in larger homes, a second area reflects a grander footprint. Here, larger furniture is used inside a series of curated, specific rooms rather than blended, open-plan living. An attached courtyard provides a space for the brand to include its outdoor range, too.

“As the way we use our homes has experienced some significant advancements and changes in recent times, we want the store to offer new perspectives on modern-day living and how Scandinavian design heritage fits into that,” says Muuto CEO, Anders Cleemann.

Muuto’s Copenhagen store opening coincides with the city-wide 3daysofdesign festival, which runs until June 16. Also taking place in the city is an exhibition hosted by fellow Danish brand &Tradition, which sees five studios tasked with rethinking the archetypal table.
