With its second-generation Polestar 2 sedan in production, performance EV automaker looks to the future with its latest concept, the Polestar O2 convertible.

“Polestar O2 is our vision of a new era for sports cars,” Polestar’s design head Maximilian Missioni said to the press. “By mixing the joy of open top driving with the purity of electric mobility, it unlocks a new mix of emotions in a car.” The vehicle will be a more compact variant of its unreleased Polestar 5 grand touring vehicle, with a 2-door roadster feel similar to the BMW 8-Series Cabriolet.

Convertible EVs are hard to find on the market, and a big reason is due to the inefficiency of traditional designs leading to a much lower range. While the company has yet to release supporting data, it claims “disguised design features like integrated ducts that improve laminar air flow over the wheels and body sides, and rear lights that function as air blades to reduce turbulence behind the car.”

Beyond the sleek lines, sharp LED light design, and futuristic rims, perhaps the most exciting part of the car is its autonomous cinematography drone which is integrated into the vehicle. The drone can follow the Polestar O2 at speeds of up to 56 mph aided by an area of negative pressure generated from an airfoil behind the rear seats. When stopped, the video captured can be edited and shared from the car’s large infotainment screen.

Polestar hasn’t revealed release information on the O2, but it’s expected to arrive around the same time as the Polestar 5 in 2024.
