It’s often difficult to spot where Sam Friedman’s art begins and ends. Sinuous tracks of color overlayed with various shapes and textures — some of the many techniques the New York-based artist uses to float between the representational and the abstract.

Friedman steers toward the latter in a new print suite, titled Beach Portfolio One at Detroit’s Louis Buhl & Co. Each print uses a unique hand-painted film technique, while referencing familiar and new colors along with identifiable imagery. The work was inspired by his past “Beach Painting” series and continues his exploration in recontextualizing natural landscapes — something he achieves through his distinctive use of line, pattern, and bright color.

Comprised of six harmonized prints, each uses four to six colored split fountain layers to create the final composition. Beach Portfolio One is hand-pulled on Mohawk Superfine UltraWhite, 160 lb cover paper with deckled edges. Sizing in at 28-inches high x 20-inches wide, the art is printed by POP!NK Editions and has since sold out.

In case you missed it, Cleon Peterson releases his second NFT collection.
