Lil B Surprises Fans With Jazz Album ‘Afrikantis’
An entirely instrumental record from the California rapper.
Lil B has surprised fans for the holidays by dropping an entirely new album. The new LP, entitled Afrikantis, sees the rapper stray from his hard-hitting hip-hop sound and dip into jazz.
Spanning 14 tracks, Afrikantis opens with a song called “My Fathers Drums,” introducing listeners to the California rapper’s new sound. It’s followed by “A Song for Mom,” “Cricket” and “Kim.”
Towards the tail end of the album, Lil B pays tribute to his home state with a series of tracks that derive their name from different points in California: “West Berkeley Ca Waterfront,” “Welcome to Oakland California” and “Park St Alameda California.”
The project is entirely instrumental, with no verses from Lil B, a surprising twist in what’s proven to be his ever-evolving discography. Afrikantis follows June’s Frozen and The Frozen Tape and August’s Thraxxx Kiss.
“Welcome To Afrikantis,” Lil B wrote in a tweet. “Lil B THIS MAY BE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT JAZZ PROJECTS EVER … TAKE UR TIME WITH THIS.”
